Voyant Exercise
Due Thursday, 6 APR
For homework I’d like for you to explore Voyant with a textual dataset of your choosing. You might want to choose a textual dataset from Alan Liu’s Demo Corpora, or you might have a dataset of your own. If you’d like, you can also do more (and different!) work with the IS Data that I’ve shared with you in our resources directory on this site.
In any case, make some time for this; it might require some data cleaning, especially if you’re starting from scratch. The goal is for you to examine a corpus that’s too large to “read” in a week and to try to make reasonable hypotheses about the corpus. These might take the form of “future research opportunities.”
- Write up your observations and your arguments in a process journal entry of 100 words.
- Put it in your process journal directory, and name it
your-name_voyant_journal.md
. - Submit a paper printout of the webpage to me at the beginning of class.
- Don’t forget the
.md
and don’t forget to take advantage of the affordances of writing for the web. - Be prepared to discuss your findings in class.
