Your Final Project (15% of course grade)

The Gist
We have done a great deal of thinking this semester about humanistic inquiry and the digital methods through which we might pursue digital humanities research. For your final project
Core Components
- Research Question. Your humanistic question should be at the core of all of this work. At first, it’ll start as an idea that will inform decisions about the components below. Through experimentation with the data and methods, you will be able to shape that into a research question. What can you ask of your data?
- Dataset. Think about the kind of data that you’d like to work with and begin to put that data together. If you want to use a textual dataset, you might begin assembling it from (e.g.) Gutenberg. If you want to do something with structured data (spreadsheets, CSV files, tables, JSON file), you should organize that data. In all cases, you’ll probably want to build in time to clean your data.
- Method/Tool. Consider how you want to explore this data. We will have built a website, a poembot, and twitter bots; explored python scripts and physical computing; and learned about stylometric and topic modeling algorithms that help us process textual data. You will also have seen low-barrier tools that you or your peers have reviewed for one another. Think about the best approach to explore your research question.
Outcomes
You will be evaluated on the following pieces for this assignment:
- 10-15 minute presentation of your research, for the class. In your presentation you should clearly articulate your research question, your dataset, and your methodology. You should discuss your findings: what conclusions were you able to draw based on your dataset? how did your methods lead you to these conclusions?
- A 500 word reflection on your experiences with the project, for me. You might include information like: Where did you run into trouble? How did you overcome hurdles? How was this project challenging? If it was not challenging, why not? Did you learn new research practices from this assignment?
- A web page on your Website that describes your core components, for the public. This will be public-facing, so the writing will be slightly different. It might be shorter, it might be longer, but the tone will definitely change. You should also include visual representations of your work somehow.
